About the Program

The Legend of Rawhide is an annual celebration of the history, stories, and western heritage of Niobrara County. In 2026, we are proud to celebrate the 80th year of this long standing tradition.

At its core, the Legend of Rawhide is a true community performance. Each year, residents from Niobrara County and surrounding areas volunteer their time, energy, and effort to bring the pageant to life. It’s something built by the community, for the community.

The original script was written in 1946 by EvaLou “Bonnie” Paris, based on stories that had been passed down through generations. That same script is still used today, continuing to share a piece of western history with every audience.

Over the years, the Legend of Rawhide has also given back to the community in meaningful ways. Following the 1950 performances, the board donated $6,000 to the fairgrounds, an amount equal to roughly $60,000 today, which helped fund the construction of buildings still in use. Since 1986, an additional $24,000 has been contributed toward fairgrounds improvements.

Beyond financial contributions, the work behind the scenes is just as important. In the weeks leading up to the performance, volunteers come together to prepare the grounds, make repairs, and take care of whatever needs to be done to make the event possible.

More than anything, the Legend of Rawhide brings people together. It builds community, strengthens connections, and reflects a shared pride in where we live. “One for all and all for one” has long been the motto, and it continues to guide the spirit of this event.

As we look ahead, we carry forward the foundation built by those who started it. To “Doc” Reckling and EvaLou “Bonnie” Paris, we owe the beginning. To those who continue to attend and support it, we owe its future. And to the next generation, we pass on a tradition that remains a lasting tribute to our heritage.
